Why Turmeric

turmericMy dear mother has decided to follow in her father’s footsteps and add “farmer” to her already impressive resume. Her farm land boasts crops such as coconut, sorrell, pineapple and turmeric and coming soon ginger. What is turmeric you ask? Turmeric is the main ingredient in the Indian curry which lends its color and aroma. Outside of being a spice it has its many health benefits.  The chief active component, curcumin is what makes turmeric good for you.

Here are a few health benefits:

  • Curcumin reduces inflamation and is therefore said to help with arthritis
  •  Preliminary lab studies suggest that curcumin or turmeric might protect against types of lung damage, skin diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, heart failure, colitis, stomach ulcers, and high cholesterol
  •  Turmeric is being studied as a preventative and even cure for certain types of cancers

So how can you use turmeric in order to benefit from it:

  • You can use turmeric to add some spice to cooked vegetables, eggs, and meat dishes. You can also add it to boiling water you’re using to make pasta, rice, soups, etc
  • It can be used as a tea-Bring four cups of water to a boil. Add one teaspoon of ground turmeric and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the tea through a fine sieve into a cup, add honey and/or lemon to taste.
  • Take it as a supplement
  • Mix it with castor oil for skin detox
